Compress PDF questions

How does PDF compression work?

This tool rewrites PDF structure and, unless you choose Structure only, recompresses supported RGB JPEG images. It keeps page content as PDF rather than turning every page into a picture.

Will my text stay selectable?

Existing text remains PDF text. Image-only scans remain image-only; this tool does not perform OCR. Page size, rotation and page order are retained.

Why is my PDF not much smaller?

Some PDFs are already optimized or use image types this version does not change. Masked images, CMYK, PNG-style image streams and unsupported colour spaces are skipped. If output is not smaller, the download returns your original bytes.

Which compression level should I choose?

Gentle retains more image detail. Balanced is a middle setting. Strong reduces supported images further and can blur fine details. Structure only leaves image streams unchanged. Always review the result.

Can I compress to exactly 100 KB?

No. Achievable size depends on the PDF. This tool shows the actual reduction rather than promising a fixed target.

What are the limits?

One PDF up to 100 MB and 500 pages. Large files need more memory. Image processing is bounded to 100 million pixels; unsupported or excessive images are skipped. Encrypted, signed and interactive-form PDFs are rejected. PDF/A and accessibility conformance are not guaranteed.
